As painters of modern Paris, the Impressionists excelled at depicting the latest fashions of a rapidly evolving consumer society in 19th century Paris. By examining paintings by Manet, Renoir, Monet and their colleagues which portray the fashion trends of this period and the culture from which they evolved, we will discover the significant role that fashion and modernity played in Impressionist painting. This informative and entertaining program will complement the Art Institute of Chicago’s upcoming exhibition Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity.
