In addition to being a founding father and mayor of Lake Forest, John V. Farwell left a lasting legacy in northern Colorado with his gold mining operation. Its seventeen-mile-long aqueduct through the Rocky Mountains was a mind-boggling engineering feat that transformed the area. Author Nolan Farwell, a distant cousin, will relate how he stumbled upon the “Farwell Ditch” quite by chance. He will describe its construction and his successful effort to attain a listing on the National Register of Historic Places for this once-forgotten piece of history. "Iron-willed men dug for gold. A hundred and fifty years later, two brothers dig there, too, and find gold of their own."
Author Nolan Farwell has brought the “Farwell Ditch” back to life with years of extensive research. He has led tours of the area and presented lectures at historical societies in Colorado. Farwell works as a financial advisor in Waterloo, Iowa and vacations regularly in the Rocky Mountains.
