Lake Forest Civic Orchestra presents “Sisters Unite,” a celebration of women on Mother’s Day! Treat your Mom and the other important women in your life to the Lake Forest Civic Orchestra concert on Sunday, May 13, at 4:00pm as we celebrate Mother’s Day with Sisters Unite, a celebration of music by women, for everyone. This program features two world premiers by women composers, American Kim Diehnelt and Indonesian composer Marisa Sharon Hartanto. Concert-goers will have a special opportunity to hear the composers tell about their challenges and successes, and attend a special champagne reception following the performance! This truly unique concert is the perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day this year. Composer and conductor Kim Diehnelt studied in both the United States and Europe, leading Baltic, Russian, and European ensembles. Her piece, Striadica: A Symphonic Passage, is an emotional orchestral journey of both strength and beauty. Marisa Sharon Hartanto won a national postgraduate composer competition in 2012, held by the BBC Concert Orchestra. Ngasirah (Ibunda Kartini) tells the story of Indonesian hero Kartini’s mother and her loving yet complicated relationship with her daughter who, because of her noble status, had to refer to her as “maid”. The program will also include Ethel Smyth’s Serenade in D and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with soloist Airin Efferin.
