The LFCO opens its 35th anniversary season with a work written to celebrate another significant anniversary. Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 was written in celebration of the 300th anniversary of the presentation of the Augsberg Confession, a significant event in the Protestant Reformation. Famous for quoting the hymn tune “A Mighty Fortress is our God,” this work is bright, joyful, and full of fanfare. The music of American Composer Gwyneth Walker is performed around the country. Dr. Walker’s Music Alone Shall Live is based on the folk song of the same name and is a rousing orchestral fanfare. We pair that with Festive Overture by another American Composer, William Grant Still.
Fremd HS flutist Tabitha Mo will round out our program with the virtuosic Carmen Fantasie by Francis Borne.
