Have you ever wondered why sailors have tattoos of pigs and chickens? How about the "Hold Fast" tattoos across a sailor's knuckles? The history of tattoos is closely intertwined with maritime history, including that of the U.S. Navy.

In this presentation, tattoo historian Dr. Anna Friedman dives deep into the fascinating history of naval tattoos. Using an array of historical images, Dr. Friedman shares the deep nautical roots of tattoos and the meaning behind the famous flash.
